The human lung mast cell.
نویسنده
چکیده
Mast cells are present in human lung tissue, pulmonary epithelium, and free in the bronchial lumen. By virtue of their location and their possession of specific receptors for IgE and complement fragments, these cells are sentinel cells in host defense. The preformed granular mediators and newly generated lipid mediators liberated upon activation of mast cells by a variety of secretagogues supply potent vasoactive-spasmogenic mediators, chemotactic factors, active enzymes, and proteoglycans to the local environment. These factors acting together induce an immediate response manifest as edema, smooth muscle constriction, mucus production, and cough. Later these mediators and those provided from plasma and leukocytes generate a tissue infiltrate of inflammatory cells and more prolonged vasoactive-bronchospastic responses. Acute and prolonged responses may be homeostatic and provide for defense of the host, but if excessive in degree or duration may provide a chronic inflammatory substrate upon which such disorders as asthma and pulmonary fibrosis may ensue.

Background and Objective: Sulfur mustard is a potent chemical vesicant warfare agent that remains a significant military and civilian threat. Inhalation of sulfur mustard gas causes inflammation and injury to airways and bronchioles. Mast cells promote allergic reactions when exposed to some chemical compounds such as HD. Hexamethylenetetramine has been shown to protect human lung cells against...
متن کاملEffects of Acute Intraperitoneal Injection on Plural Rat Lungs
Purpose: Sulfur mustard (SM), a highly toxic chemical warfare, primarily targets the skin, eye and respiratory tract. Respiratory tract lesions are the most disabling consequences. Mast cells, containing special granules that store histamine and heparin, release leukotrienes. It is known that the surface of mast cells contains specific receptors for 19B. Therefore, mast cells promote allergic r...
متن کاملAnti-inflammatory, Antipruritic and Mast Cell Stabilizing Activity of Aristolochia Indica
Objective(s) Aristolochia indica has been widely used in the traditional medicine for the treatment of a variety of diseases. In the present study different extracts of roots of A. indica were evaluated for their antiinflammatory, antipruritic and mast cell stabilizing activity. Materials and Methods Anti-inflammatory activity was performed by compound 48/80 induced rat paw edema model and ...
متن کاملDifferential Effects of the Complement Peptides , C 5 a and C 5 a des Arg on Human Basophil and Lung Mast Cell Histamine
The ability of purified anaphylatoxins to induce human lung mast cell mediator release was investigated. In eight anti-IgE responsive (histamine release = 22±5%, mean±SEM) mast cell preparations of 1-96% purity, C5a and C5a des Arg (0.55 pg/ml to 55 pg/ml), failed to elicit or potentiate histamine release; lung fragments were similarly unresponsive. The related peptide C3a was also inactive. Al...
متن کاملMast cells and histopathologic variants of basal cell carcinoma
Background and aim: The stroma of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is rich in mast cells. Morpheaform BCC has been reported to contain much more mast cells than the other types of BCC, but their significance remains unknown. In this study we investigated the significance of mast cells related to BCC and possible relationship between increased number of mast cells and clinical and histological p...
متن کاملA comparative study on the mast cells count in oral squamous cell carcinoma and normal oral mucosa
Introduction: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the 10 most common malignant tumors and SCC accounts 94% of all oral malignancies. Mast cells are regarded as complex and multifunctional cells, playing a significant role in immunopathology . The aim of this study is to evaluate the number of mast cells in tissue sections of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in comparison with norma...
